Our Story
The Sheekhaal Development Network was born from a simple but powerful truth: our community needed a home. A place where Sheekhaal people — whether in Minneapolis, Mogadishu, London, or Toronto — could find one another, support one another, and build something lasting together.
Founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by a group of dedicated community members, SDN began as a local effort to address the immediate needs of Sheekhaal families in the Twin Cities. What started with small gatherings and grassroots fundraising quickly grew into something far greater.
Today, the Sheekhaal Development Network spans more than 12 countries, connecting thousands of community members through programs in education, health, and community services. Our headquarters remain in Minneapolis — a city that has welcomed so many of our people — but our vision is global and our commitment is boundless.
Our Programs
Three pillars that define our work and drive lasting impact across the Sheekhaal community.
Education & Youth Development
We invest in the next generation through scholarships, tutoring support, mentorship programs, and youth leadership initiatives. From early childhood literacy to college readiness, we ensure every Sheekhaal child has the tools to succeed.
Health & Wellness
We connect community members to health resources, host free health screenings, and partner with local clinics to address the unique health needs of our community. Healthy families build strong communities.
Community Services at Large
From emergency assistance and housing support to job readiness and civic engagement, our community services programs meet people where they are and help them build stable, thriving lives.
Annual Community Gala
Each year, the Sheekhaal Development Network hosts its Annual Gala at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Minneapolis — a landmark evening bringing together community members, youth leaders, and elected officials to celebrate our progress, honor our people, and look ahead.
